LYRICS

PictureHere I am at 18 with my first guitar. My cousin Jessica and I are having some fun co-writing some lyrics.

I started writing music when I received my first guitar for my 18th birthday. I remember locking myself in my room for hours, marveling at the works of other singer-songwriters I had so dearly looked up to. Some of my favorites were Jewel, Michelle Branch, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple and Lisa Loeb. The list is actually pretty endless, but these were the poetic women who really shaped my love for writing in the lyrical style. Most of my songs, I played around the NJ Acoustic Open Mic circuit, and I was even fortunate enough to have been able to record a few songs  or “excerpts” of this life of mine. I hope you enjoy reading through these, as much as I did creating them.

Am I the Only One?

ABOUT THE SONG
This song was written in 2005 or 2006. I remember coming up with the melody and words to the last line of the song, around 5 am while I was in the shower, getting ready for work. At the time I was going through a rough patch with breaking up with my live band, rockiness in friendships, and rejection from labels I was shopping my music around to. I was feeling pretty low, and I hate to say it, but the pity party was in full swing. Writing this helped me alleviate all of that frustration of rejection and the fallouts that just came with growing up. I was about 22 or 23 at the time, so with the writing of my Last One Standing EP, came many lessons that I learned about life. I never did feel like I belonged, growing up, so this is dedicated to my fellow misfits everywhere.

Verse 1:
Every single day, I step into the crowd
Maybe someone will see me
Camouflaged in faces, voices loud
And I wonder why no one hears me

Pre Chorus:
I’m like the last kid standing
When everybody else already has their team

Chorus:
Am I the only one
That they don’t see?
Am I the only one to yell
When inside I wanna scream
Am I the only one,
To hate me?

Verse 2:
All I ever give is sympathy
To the ones who needed me
Now everyone’s hiding
And I’m left here to seek

Pre Chorus:
Cuz even when the sun is out
And the day is shining,
All I ever see is rain…

Chorus:
Am I the only one
That they don’t see?
Am I the only one to yell
When inside I wanna scream
Am I the only one,
To hate me?

Bridge:
Ooooh, ooooh
(Guitar Solo)

Chorus:
Am I the only one
That they don’t see?
Am I the only one to yell
When inside I wanna scream
Am I the only one,
To hate me?
Am I the only one
That they don’t see?
Am I the only one to yell
When inside I wanna scream
Am I the only one,
To hate me?

Coda:
Cuz when I look at myself
I see someone else
That’s anyone but me
