ABOUT THE SONG
I wrote the music for this song in the spring or summer of 2008, and the lyrical content was just extremely different. Originally it had been about being in a relationship that other people might not approve of. I really wasn't happy with these lyrics so I left the song unfinished for awhile. It wasn't until 2009 or 2010 that I had completed the song. I had just sat down one day and the lyrics effortlessly flew out of me. You can really tell the difference from when a song feels forced to when the muses take over. So the new and final lyrics ended up being a concept kind of inspired by the duel with devil in Tenacious D's The Pick of Destiny. The song is basically a musical duel with the devil, and paying "tribute" (another Tenacious D references haha!) to my Jersey roots - everyone should know the legend of the Jersey Devil. It's a fun swing rock song, and I could see the production being kind of like a Stray Cats meets KT Tunstall type of sound. These are probably some of my favorite lyrics I've ever written; they're just so playful! Also I just want to mention the legend of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", and how they say that no one has ever been able to cover that song without breaking a string, and that the song is "cursed". Well, let me just say that when I demoed this song acoustically, right after I wrote it, I actually popped my string at the climax of the song, and that was only the SECOND time I had ever broken a string in my 10+ years of playing guitar. Was I playing too hard, or was it the Jersey Devil himself at work? STRAAAAAAAAANGE..... Music & Lyrics By Justina Carubia Scratch Demos © 2009 Verse 1: Hey little devil With your light upon my soul I'm not asking what you want Because that I do already know Come out to play now A little duel, one on one Put the fire on the 6 strings Now the battle has begun .... Pre Chorus: Look out now! The Devil's back from Georgia And he's in the shape of a man Chorus: Don't you dare Stop and stare You better turn around Turn up the sound We're gonna play tonight Until our fingers bleed... We'll make you aware Give me that snare We're gonna bust your chops With slap and pop The Jersey Devil Jams with me.... Jams with me... Oh oh oh oh Verse 2: You fire up that sound Like you just came from hell-o operator Won'tcha give me Give me # 9 The battle's almost over So if you don't My life might as well Be on the line... Chorus: Don't you dare Stop right there! You better turn around Turn up the sound We're gonna play tonight Until our fingers bleed... We'll make you aware Give me that snare We're gonna bust your chops With slap and pop The Jersey Devil Jams with me....
