LYRICS

PictureHere I am at 18 with my first guitar. My cousin Jessica and I are having some fun co-writing some lyrics.

I started writing music when I received my first guitar for my 18th birthday. I remember locking myself in my room for hours, marveling at the works of other singer-songwriters I had so dearly looked up to. Some of my favorites were Jewel, Michelle Branch, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple and Lisa Loeb. The list is actually pretty endless, but these were the poetic women who really shaped my love for writing in the lyrical style. Most of my songs, I played around the NJ Acoustic Open Mic circuit, and I was even fortunate enough to have been able to record a few songs  or “excerpts” of this life of mine. I hope you enjoy reading through these, as much as I did creating them.

Lucid Dream

ABOUT THE SONG
I wrote this song around 2003 when I started getting a little experimental with finger picking. I remember coming up with this intro first and foremost, and I honestly couldn't play this intro right now if I tried. I don't remember what notes I'm even playing in this intro. I don't really quite remember where the inspiration came for this one, but it's definitely more somber and a bit darker than my earlier material. I'm pretty sure this was the year Evanescence came out, so I was really starting to get inspired by that darker sound.

I remember recording this, my dad had bought a 4 tracker recording system so I could get ideas down. and we experimented with harmonies and even wind chimes. He was even able to add some echo and reverb to my voice at the end, which sounds totally cheesy now, but for its time, it was a nifty way to do my own home recordings. We really take for granted all the high end gear that we have access to these days, that enable us to do our own studio quality recordings. Back then you used to have to go to a studio and pay to get a professional sounding recording, so this was the best I could do at home with the budget and resources we had at the time.

2003 doesn't seem like so long ago, but as far as technological advancements for audio recording, this method was pretty archaic but was all that was available at that time, without going into debt hahaha.

Music and Lyrics
By Justina Carubia
Scratch Demos 2003

Verse 1:
Won't you tuck me in tonight
The wind is banging on my door again
And I can't sleep a wink

Pre Chorus:
My head is spinning slowly
Can't go back into that world
So stay with me while I

Chorus:
Sleep
I can't go there all by myself
I need you here with me
The fear of my imagination
Won't let me be
If everything is as real as it seems
I'll need you here to rescue me

Verse 2:
When you are it's serene
Like a piece of driftwood
Floating down a periwinkle stream

Pre Chorus:
I'm drifting towards a deep blue sleep
I can't go back into that world
So stay with me while I....

Chorus:
Sleep
I can't go there all by myself
I need you here with me
The fear of my imagination
Won't let me be
If everything is as real as it seems
I'll need you here to rescue me
Out of my Lucid Dream...

Bridge:
And I'm waiting for you
To save me...
Just don't call my name
I might get scared and drift away
So just let me sleep...

Chorus:
Sleep
I can't go there all by myself
I need you here with me
The fear of my imagination
Won't let me be
If everything is as real as it seems
I'll need you here to rescue me
Out of my Lucid Dream...
