Why Isn’t This Girl Famous?
Contributed by Tim Weber

Last summer I went to see my friend Nell Bryden on my first trip ever to the Indigo Coffee House. It was a triple bill, with Nell being the middle artist, and I’ll be truthful in saying that the opening act was really tough to sit through. I sat with Nell and toughed it out. Nell did her usual sweet set, and I said to her upon completion, “If the next act isn’t better than the first, I’m out of here”. I was never so pleasantly surprised with all I was about to hear; a vocalist with originality and talent, who turned out to be Justina. Her vocals had a “tough girl” grit to them, but could also flutter so sweetly.

I bought her CD and listened to it all the way home, and the rest is history. Now it’s been a year, and as my favorite vocalist, I’ve gone to see her countless times, and watched her evolve and polish her act. The biggest thing that sets her apart from other singer /songwriters I’ve gone to see regularly is that there are always new songs, at least one and sometimes up to three! She goes on stage winging it, without a set playlist, and plays songs that fit that very moment, to fit her mood and the mood of the crowd. Another impressive aspect of Justina’s onstage persona is her oh-so flawless guitar playing. Although she never tries to step outside her ability, her guitar work has gotten more complex over the last year, leading up to a tiny little riff the last show that sent chills.

And then there’s that voice. She’s got a range that would make an opera singer envious, and can hold a note with the best of them. There’s always that sense of humor as well. I still have a grin on my face 3 days later. So why isn’t this girl famous? I guess the record labels don’t place much emphasis on talent, personality and looks these days. All I can say, and my apologies for using a tired phrase, but she must just be “under the radar”. I average 2 concerts and 4-6 different artists per weekend, and can honestly say that none of them have anything on Justina. She’s a breath of fresh air in a world of singer/songwriters trying to be popular by trying to please the public before themselves.

Justina stays true to herself and her fans by not sacrificing her art for commercial purposes. This is definitely a case of taking the hard route to the top, but I believe that she’s still on her way. Do yourselves a favor and catch her act the next time she’s on stage. You’ll be more than pleasantly surprised.
