LYRICS

PictureHere I am at 18 with my first guitar. My cousin Jessica and I are having some fun co-writing some lyrics.

I started writing music when I received my first guitar for my 18th birthday. I remember locking myself in my room for hours, marveling at the works of other singer-songwriters I had so dearly looked up to. Some of my favorites were Jewel, Michelle Branch, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple and Lisa Loeb. The list is actually pretty endless, but these were the poetic women who really shaped my love for writing in the lyrical style. Most of my songs, I played around the NJ Acoustic Open Mic circuit, and I was even fortunate enough to have been able to record a few songs  or “excerpts” of this life of mine. I hope you enjoy reading through these, as much as I did creating them.

Indian Giver

ABOUT THE SONG
This song was written in 2004 about a bad breakup in which the dumpee wants everything that she gave her ex-boyfriend back from him, including her heart. This is the classic tale of the guy leaves the girl for another girl. The song title and hook stems from the old term “Indian Giver”, which could be controversial to some, but it is not meant to offend anyone of Native American decent.
Indian giver is an American expression to describe a person who gives a gift and later wants it back, or something equivalent in return. It is based on the experiences of early European settlers and pioneers like Lewis and Clark when trading with Native Americans. The term and how it is used in this song is just a play on the meaning of the term.

When I listen to the song today, I actually cringe because of how politically incorrect it is, by today's standards.  I was 18 when I wrote the song, in 2004, over a decade and a half ago, it was just a different time then. There was no politically correct racial awareness then, like there is today.  People have become more sensitized to things like this, so I would never write a song like this today. I don't like offending anyone, not intentionally anyway...

Verse 1:
So I dropped off your stuff today and picked up mine
There was a picture frame
I gave to you last Valentine’sIt was a gift,
I want it back
Don’t you try to tell me to relax

Chorus:
I’m an Indian Giver
I may be a bit bitter
Now I’m so bare
And I’m suffering
from your decisions
Oh how I’ve tried and I
lost my mind
Now I just want back
What belongs to me
I’m still hurting inside
mmhmm

Verse 2:
So I went to your mailbox
And I looked inside
There was a picture of the three of us
Me you and your pride
I don’t even love you anymore
I’m takin’ back those words…

Chorus:
I’m an Indian Giver
I may be a bit bitter
Now I’m so bare
And I’m suffering
from your decisions
Oh how I’ve tried and I
lost my mind
Now I just want back
What belongs to me
I’m still hurting inside
I’m still hurting

Bridge:
Do you really wanna
get rid of me that bad
Your flavor of the week
am I your latest fad
I gave my heart to you
Now I want it
Want it back
Back , back , yea
Baby I want it back, back yea yea yea yea yea
Oh, whoa oa

Chorus Repeat til end
